Domestic Lighting

Most of us have changed the pendant or GLS bulbs in our house to energy saving or CFL bulbs, see our identification guide. You can improve your savings even further by installing LED versions of these bulbs but there is a type of bulb we all have that uses far more electricity than the pendant bulbs we have already replaced. Nearly every home has been fitted or retrofitted with the ubiquitous halogen downlighters. These units look good and are slightly more efficient than standard halogen bulbs, as we discuss in our types guide. Have a look around your house and count how many of these bulbs you have, multiply this number by 50 and you have the power these bulbs consume. In most houses the kettle uses the most electricity and they are usually 1500W to 2000W so if you have 30 - 40 bulbs it is like running your kettle constantly.

A common misconception is that the 12V low voltage bulbs are energy saving. Unfortunatly this is not true, althought they run at 12V they still use 50W and so cost exactly the same to run as the 240V versions.

The life of these halogen bulbs is typically between 1,500hours and 2,000hours which means you would be changing them every 7 months in the example above. The LED technology lasts over 25,000 hours so for the same scenario they would last over 11 years. Infact if the halogen bulbs cost £2.00 each to buy then over the lifetime of the LED bulb you will be paying nearly three times as much to buy the halogens.

 

 

Commercial lighting

Many commercial premesis' use halogen downloghters for window displays, cabinet displays and other areas to highlight products. LED bulbs will produce the same effect whilst drastically reducing your electricity bill. Just as with the domestic products there is no need to change the fittings or carry out any rewiring. As the bulbs tend to be lit for extended periods then there is an even greater saving in your electricity bill but don't forget about the expense and hassle of constantly replacing the halogen bulbs, using LEDs means they are practically fit and forget.

 

 

Mobile

Caravans, mobile homes, narrow boats and many other mobile applications use 12V halogen bulbs for lighting. By replacing them with LED bulbs your battery will last many times longer.
